Hair Drug and Alcohol Testing

90 Day Hair Toxicology Screening

Why Employers Choose 90 Day Hair Drug Testing

By conducting regular 90 day hair drug and alcohol tests, employers prioritize employee well being and significantly reduce workplace risk associated with substance abuse.

Maintaining a workforce free from the influence of drugs or alcohol improves overall safety and helps minimize:

  • Workplace accidents and injuries
  • Errors caused by impaired judgment or coordination
  • Ongoing patterns of drug or alcohol use over time

Hair testing provides a long term record of substance exposure, making it an effective tool for employment screening, compliance programs, and post incident evaluations.

What Drugs and Substances are Tested?

HOW HAIR DRUG TESTING WORKS

Hair sample collection is simple, non invasive, and highly controlled.

  • 90 to 120 strands of hair are snipped close to the scalp
  • Hair length collected is approximately 1.5 inches, representing a 90 day detection window
  • Samples are taken from several discreet locations on the head
  • The hair is placed in a sealed envelope containing:
    • Donor name
    • Date and time of collection
    • Name of witness (if required)

The sealed sample is then sent to our laboratory along with the required submission documentation.

Why Hair Testing Is More Accurate Than Urine Testing

The Problem With Urine Tests

The average adult produces 1 to 2 liters of urine per day, depending on hydration, activity, and health.

This volume can range from 0.6 to 2.6 liters, which directly impacts test accuracy.

How Urine Volume Affects Results

Dilution

  • High fluid intake increases urine volume
  • Drug metabolites and alcohol become diluted
  • Positive results may fall below cutoff thresholds, especially for substances like THC

Alcohol Testing Limitations

  • Alcohol causes increased urine production shortly after drinking
  • Less than 10 percent of alcohol is excreted unchanged in urine
  • The relationship between blood alcohol concentration and urine alcohol levels is inconsistent
  • Timing of urine collection heavily affects result accuracy

Why Hair Testing Is Not Affected

Unlike urine testing, hair testing is not distorted by hydration or urine volume.

Once substances enter the hair shaft, they remain stable and measurable regardless of fluid intake.

Hair testing provides:

  • Greater consistency
  • Reduced manipulation risk
  • A reliable long term exposure record

Scientific Validity and Detection Window

Hair follicle drug testing offers a longer detection window than other testing methods.

  • Drug use may not appear in hair for 7 to 10 days after exposure
  • Once incorporated into the hair shaft, substances remain detectable for weeks or months
  • Hair testing identifies patterns of use, not current intoxication

This makes hair testing ideal for identifying repeated or long term substance exposure rather than short term or situational use.

Industry Data and Adoption

  • In a large scale analysis conducted in 2015, over 10.5 million drug tests were performed by a major testing provider
  • Approximately 200,000 were hair tests
  • A 2018 report showed:
    • About 90 percent of employers used urine testing
    • Only 7 percent used hair testing

Despite lower adoption, hair testing is widely recognized for its higher accuracy and longer detection window, particularly in safety sensitive and compliance driven environments.
